Diane Long A Mississippi native who has been a Texas transplant for 29 years, Diane Long is a wife, mother, and former English teacher who has written Pecan Plantation Bits for 16 years cumulatively. She spends her time both gathering neighborhood news and collecting new books to read.

Summer might be coming to an end, but another neighborhood party is on Pecan’s agenda. Labor Day will hold a two-day celebration with a street dance and activities happening Sunday evening, Sept. 3, followed by a pool party with a disk jockey playing music on Monday, Sept. 4.

POOL HOURS

The clubhouse pool is open today, Saturday, Sept. 2, tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. with Labor Day Monday being the final swim day of the season. Lifeguards are on duty during pool operating hours.

The PAC pool is open daily (except Wednesday) from 7:30 a.m. to sunset. Lifeguards are not on duty, and “swim at your own risk” is in effect.

GOLF TIME

Pecan’s golf course will be open on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 4, and tee times have been assigned through a random lottery. The course will be closed Tuesday, Sept. 5 for maintenance.

GUITAR LESSONS

The next session of beginner guitar lessons for adults will commence on Thursday, Sept. 7 at the PAC. Reading music is not a prerequisite for the class, which will include six to eight sessions. The meeting time is Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. with a $25 weekly fee. Instructor Carolyn Troland encourages students to bring a guitar with new strings and says she will have class members “playing favorite songs in no time.” Contact Carolyn for more information (580-369-8485) and the PAC to sign up: 817-573-7952.

GOLF TOURNAMENT

The “Let Freedom Ring” Member-Guest Tournament for the Ladies’ Golf Association is on the calendar for Sept. 18-20, and deadline for sign up is Friday, Sept. 8. Contact the golf pro shop: 817-573-2645.

BATTER UP

Senior softball for players ages 55 and older began last week at the PAC softball field, and the first game happens on Monday, Sept. 11 at 9:30 a.m. Participants and spectators are welcome to join, and all participants should bring a glove. Fall junior tennis has a start date of Wednesday, Sept. 6 with ages 6-9 playing at 4:30 p.m. and ages 10-12 at 5:30. Sign up in the pro shop: 817-579-9412.

MEETINGS SCHEDULED

The board members of the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service will be hosting town hall meetings to discuss the proposed assessment increase for 2024. Gatherings will be held at the Charlie Lee Building at the emergency compound on Monticello Drive on Saturday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Oct. 14 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. both days.

AUXILIARY MEETING

The next meeting of the Pecan Plantation Volunteer Fire Department/Emergency Medical Service Auxiliary will happen Monday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. Folks desiring to enjoy a light meal and fellowship before the official gathering may arrive at 6. All Pecan residents are invited to attend.

AUXILIARY FUNDRAISER

At the Auxiliary’s meeting on Sept. 11, members will be discussing fall fundraisers, the next of which is the Fall Bazaar, formerly known as the Arts and Crafts Fair, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 30 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the PAC grounds. Gates will be open that day for the public to attend this event, which always provides an exciting opportunity for shoppers to find unique, handcrafted home décor, apparel, artwork, and food and gift items.

Spaces for vendors both outside and in the activity room may be requested by calling 615-394-5058. Food will be available for purchase in the PAC kitchen.

In addition, Cowtown Gold and Silver will be on hand to purchase scrap gold, silver, and other precious metals with the VFD/EMS receiving a portion of the day’s profits.

Every cent raised at the Auxiliary’s fundraisers supports Pecan’s emergency personnel.

WOMAN’S CLUB

The Pecan Plantation Woman’s Club will begin its 45^th year in Pecan on Thursday, Sept. 21, and the year’s schedule holds numerous celebratory elements for this sapphire anniversary. The PPWC invites all ladies in Pecan to join, and its website holds registration information: www.myppwc.com.

At the inaugural meeting of the club year, ladies may purchase PPWC monogrammed t-shirts, tote bags, and pouches, the proceeds of which will benefit the ladies’ chosen charities and scholarship recipients. Ladies may remit cash or check for these fast-selling items.

BEVERAGE CART

The very popular golf course beverage cart announces its “happy hour” specials happening every day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Specially priced drinks (along with hotdogs) will be available for purchase.

SYMPATHY

Our deepest sympathy goes the family of Mary Jane Webb who passed away Aug. 26. Mary was both a long-time resident of Pecan as well as a faithful employee of our community’s security department.
